132 NEW APPRENTICE TRAINEES FOR ROLLS-ROYCE POWER SYSTEMS

• 68 young people commence apprenticeships and degree courses in Friedrichshafen, 29 elsewhere in Germany and 35 internationally
• New apprenticeship discipline for Logistics in Friedrichshafen
• Also nine apprentice trainees from three partner businesses in the Lake Constance area

FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, GERMANY – This year sees a total of 132 young people commence their apprenticeships and sandwich degree courses with Rolls-Royce Power Systems and its subsidiaries at home and abroad. “Motivated apprentices and students are the bedrock for the future of any business”, says Gerhard Müller, Human Resources Manager for Germany at Rolls-Royce Power Systems. The professional high-quality, real-life training at Rolls-Royce Power Systems prepares young people superbly for their future careers, he adds.

At subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen, the starting bell rings on 5th September for 53 apprentice trainees, heralding the start of their professional careers. 15 sandwich-course students are due to start their degree courses with Rolls-Royce Power Systems on 1st October. The diverse training curriculum on offer encompasses eleven blue-collar and white-collar career disciplines. The latest additions are Warehouse Operator and Warehouse Logistics Operative. “Given that tasks in the logistics function have become ever more complex in recent years, the Company has decided to train the skilled workers we need ourselves”, says Martin Stocker, Head of Vocational Training. As well as the apprenticeships, there are six sandwich degree courses in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering and electrical engineering.

We offer our apprentices not just attractive prospects for the future, but also a secure job”, says Hans-Jürgen Nirschl, member of the company's Works Council.

In Friedrichshafen, 20 industrial mechanics make up the largest group of new apprentices, followed by nine mechatronic technicians and seven automation technology electricians. In addition to the Company's own apprentices, nine apprentices of a syndicate also involving local companies like Zeppelin Systems GmbH, Schulz Engineering and ZF Friedrichshafen AG, are starting their training at Rolls-Royce Power Systems in the technical product design and design mechanics disciplines. Of 15 sandwich course students, eight have decided to embark on the mechanical engineering degree course. The electrical engineering degree course is being taken by four students, with three studying industrial engineering.

L’Orange, the injection specialist in the Rolls-Royce Power Systems Group, is taking on 13 apprentice trainees in the industrial mechanics and precision metal machining disciplines at its Glatten facility. Three young women and one man are also to commence sandwich degree courses. MTU Reman Technologies in Magdeburg is training four young people: One machinist and three industrial mechanics. mtu Onsite Energy in Augsburg is getting four young people started in their careers as they commence apprenticeships as industrial management assistants and mechatronic technicians. Two mechatronic technicians and two industrial management assistants are also commencing their training at the Ruhstorf facility.

German-style apprenticeships are also available in the US at our facilities in Mankato and Aiken: here, a total of nine new apprentices have been taken on. Twelve apprentice trainees started technical training programs at Bergen Engines in Norway as early as August. The training year at mtu South Africa got underway in 2016 with 14 apprentices learning engine assembly and servicing in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Simons Town. With a total of 132 trainees worldwide in blue-collar, white-collar and engineering disciplines, Rolls-Royce Power Systems is investing today in the specialists of tomorrow.
