FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, GERMANY/JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – Rolls-Royce will be exhibiting its mtu rail drive and service solutions at Africa Rail, Africa’s largest rail conference and exhibition, from 28 to 29 June in Johannesburg. The company will showcase a 16V 4000 R43R engine fulfilling South African emissions requirements at booth H2 in the main exhibition hall. Products from mtu have been driving railway vehicles for more than 90 years. The mtu brand is part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

Andrea Nono, CEO of mtu South Africa, said: “Africa is a market of huge importance for us. We are proud to be part of one of the largest transport infrastructure projects in South Africa with our strongest mtu locomotive engines.” mtu is supplying a total of 232 type 20V 4000 R63L engines with an output of 3,300 Kilowatt for new freight locomotives for South African operator Transnet Freight Rail. The Class 45 locomotives are designed by CRRC of China, the world’s biggest rolling stock manufacturer. The first two locomotives are currently being shipped from China to South Africa. Only the first 20 locomotives will be built in China, the remaining 212 will be assembled in South Africa. The same is true for the locomotives’ mtu engines: Following 20 engines completely built in Friedrichshafen, Germany, 212 engine kits will be delivered to mtu South Africa for final assembly, painting and testing. mtu South Africa is currently upgrading its facilities in order to build up capacities to carry out this new manufacturing activity.

The 16V 4000 R43R mtu engine on show has an output of 2,000 Kilowatt and is well-suited for use in locomotives all over Africa – for heavy shunting locomotives as well as for freight and passenger transport on different gauges. Since 1996, more than 2,500 mtu Series 4000 rail engines have been sold worldwide and proven their power and reliability in the toughest of conditions on all continents.

The mtu portfolio is rounded off by the “mtu ValueCare” service program, including customized maintenance solutions, genuine spare parts and remanufactured products. mtu ValueCare service products ensure maximum availability, reliability and efficiency over the entire product lifecycle. With over 1,200 service points around the globe, mtu can provide the individual support users need.
