  • German Award for Sustainability Projects 2024 recognises microgrid solution in Pusane, West India
  • Project secures power supply and improves quality of life for villagers

Rolls-Royce's Power Systems division has been honoured with the German Award for Sustainability Projects 2024 for a project to develop and promote a microgrid in the Indian village of Pusane. The microgrid, consisting of photovoltaics, battery storage and a power generator, provides the inhabitants of the village with an energy supply for schools, temples and important everyday facilities. They also benefit from an improved water supply, as the water pumps can now be operated continuously.

"As a global company, we take responsibility for society and the environment as part of our sustainability strategy. We are proud that our activities are improving the lives of the people in Pusane and that we have been recognised for this," says Dr Daniel Chatterjee, Head of Sustainability, Technology Strategy and Regulatory Affairs at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

Pusane is located around 25 kilometres from the western Indian city of Pune. For a long time, the remote village struggled with frequent power outages, causing problems with the power supply to the school and the administration office, among others. As part of a corporate social responsibility project, the subsidiary MTU India developed and financially supported a microgrid solution to supply the village with electricity at selected locations. The microgrid utilises solar modules with a capacity of 8.811 KWp as the main power source and a battery storage system with a capacity of 11.7 kWh. A 30 kVA power generator supplements the system and ensures the power supply in an emergency.

Engineers from MTU India were responsible for the planning, development and realisation of the project in close consultation with Pusane. "We supported the village administration with all questions and problems throughout the project," says G.S. Selwyn, Managing Director of MTU India. "For example, additional investments had to be made by the village administration to build a paved road to the site." MTU India had been supporting Pusane for several years with various initiatives, including the donation of laptops and smartboards for the school.

The German Award for Sustainability Projects is presented annually by the German Institute for Service Quality, the TV channel n-tv and the DUP Unternehmer platform. The award recognises projects that are characterised by sustainability and innovative approaches. The award was presented under the patronage of former Federal Minister of Economics Brigitte Zypries.
