A clear run with mtu

Posted on June 02, 2020

The city of New York is in a state of emergency. Nowhere in America has the corona virus ravaged as much as New York. Although the situation is slowly improving, New Yorkers are still being told to stay at home.   Everyone except the medical staff, which is needed in the hospitals. To make their journey as pleasant as possible, they are currently allowed to use the catamarans of Seastreak Ferries between New Jersey and New York free of charge.

Four mtu Series 4000 twelve-cylinder engines ensure that not only medical personnel are reliably transported to New York. Since 2018, they have been powering the Commodore to speeds of up to 39 knots (72 kilometers per hour). And so well, in fact, that the shipping company has already ordered another ship with mtu engines from Incat Crowther. The Commodore's sister ship is to become one of the country's largest catamarans. With a length of 45 meters and a beam of twelve meters, it will have room for more than 600 passengers. “Since our goal is to not only meet but exceed customer expectations in terms of performance, quality and industry standards, we are thrilled that the success of the Seastreak Commodore has led to another ferry project powered by our engines,” said Jeff Sherman, senior sales manager, mtu America. “Working with partners like Seastreak and Incat Crowther, who strive to meet the same goals as we do, is always a rewarding experience.”

Like the Seastreak Commodore, the new ship will be able to transport passengers from Wall Street to northern New Jersey in under 40 minutes and will feature passenger comforts such as luxury seating, panoramic windows, interior LED lighting, flat screen TVs, multiple dedicated charging stations, Wi-Fi, and high-tech HVAC systems. The passenger seating arrangement will include more than 500 interior seats and more than 180 exterior seats on the second and third deck.

Only a fraction of it is being used at the moment. In order to protect their passengers, high safety standards apply to all Seastreak catamarans: In order to keep their distance, the few passengers should keep their distance, wear a mask and leave as few fingerprints as possible.
