Rolls-Royce is currently developing and testing a hybrid powertrain prototype for mining haul trucks, combining proven mtu engines with high-performance electric drive technology. The project is focused on exploring new opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce emissions in demanding mining operations.
The hybrid concept recovers braking energy during downhill operation and stores it in batteries for reuse during uphill driving. This reduces engine load, lowers fuel consumption and can significantly decrease CO₂ emissions, depending on mine topography and duty cycle.
The prototype program is designed to generate operational insights and application-specific experience under real mining conditions, helping Rolls-Royce evaluate future technology pathways and potential next development steps.
Proven Hybrid Expertise Across Applications
Rolls-Royce brings extensive experience in hybrid propulsion technologies across complex applications. Hybrid solutions based on mtu technologies are already in operation in marine and rail environments, where efficiency, reliability and intelligent energy management are essential.
This experience forms the foundation for the current mining hybrid prototype program, transferring proven hybrid expertise into one of the world’s most demanding off-highway applications.
With decades of experience in advanced power systems, Rolls-Royce continues to explore technologies that support more efficient and sustainable heavy-duty operations.
