Rolls-Royce showcases mtu fuel cell system at UN Climate Change Conference

- Exhibit at COP26 will showcase pioneering net zero technology solutions to tackle climate change including mtu fuel cell and all-electric aircraft the ‘Spirit of Innovation’.
- COP26 is a United Nations global summit on climate change and how countries are planning to tackle it attended by world leaders, heads of state and royalty.
Rolls-Royce is proud to present its new mtu fuel cell system for a future CO2-free energy supply for the first time at the UN Climate Change Conference [COP26] from 31 October to 12 November 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland. The complete solution for reliable power supply in the megawatt range will be produced in series from 2025. Rolls-Royce is also developing fuel cell systems for ships and, as part of its Net Zero at Power Systems climate protection programme, is preparing its most important engine series for the use of sustainable fuels. Hydrogen and methanol engines are also being developed as part of this programme, as well as concepts for decentralised power-to-X plants. Power-to-x is a process that converts green electricity into storable fuel.
Rolls-Royce is also showcasing a model of its all-electric “Spirit of Innovation” aircraft in Glasgow. Rolls-Royce made history when it took to the skies for the first time in September 2021. Funded by the UK government, the “Accelerating the Electrification of Flight” project (ACCEL) is a highly specialised challenge to build the world’s fastest all-electric aircraft. This zero-emissions plane is expected to make a run for the record books with a target speed of 300+ MPH (480+ KMH). The advanced battery and propulsion technology developed for this programme has exciting applications for electric vertical takeoff and landing [eVTOL] and commuter aircraft.
Fuel cell solutions, sustainable fuels, hydrogen and methanol engines and all-electric and hybrid-electric aircraft are just some of the key elements in Rolls-Royce’s ambition to achieve net zero by 2050 at the latest. “We firmly believe that technology can be used to tackle the challenge of climate change. That is the reason why we are presenting our new technologies at the World Climate Summit. We are focusing our technological capabilities to play a leading role in enabling significant elements of the global economy to get to net zero carbon by 2050, including aviation, shipping, and power generation.” said Andreas Schell, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
Rolls-Royce experts will be actively participating in various events at COP26. For example, Dr Daniel Chatterjee, Head of Technology Strategy at the Power Systems Business unit, will join the panel discussion on: “Green Business Globally: from circular business design to green technology solutions” on 6 November 2021 at 13:00 GMT in the EU Pavilion. Rachael Everard, Head of Sustainability at Rolls-Royce plc, Dave Smith, Director of Central Technology and Matheu Parr, Programme Lead for ACCEL are speaking on net zero aviation in the Climate Action Hub on Transport day at 16:00 GMT on 10 November which can be live streamed from here.
